چکیده

We present fluorine abundances in seven red-giant members of the globular cluster M4 (NGC 6121). These abundances were derived from the HF (1–0) R9 line at 2.3357μm in high-resolution infrared spectra obtained with the Phoenix spectrograph on Gemini-South. Many abundances in the target stars have been studied previously, so that their overall abundance distributions are well-mapped. The abundance of fluorine is found to vary by more than a factor of 6, with the F variations being correlated with the already established oxygen variations, and anti-correlated with the sodium and aluminium variations. Se p 19 99 Chemical Abundances of Bright Giants in the Mildly Metal - Poor Globular Cluster

We present a chemical composition analysis of three dozen giant stars in the nearby “CN-bimodal” mildly metal-poor (<[Fe/H]> = -1.18) globular cluster M4. The analysis combined traditional spectroscopic abundance methods with modifications to the line-depth ratio technique pioneered by Gray (1994). Silicon and aluminum are found to be primordially overabundant by factors exceeding the mild over...

Helium variation due to self–pollution among Globular Cluster stars: Consequences on the horizontal branch morphology

It is becoming clear that ‘self–pollution’ by the ejecta of massive asymptotic giant branch stars has an important role in the early chemical evolution of globular cluster stars, producing CNO abundance spreads which are observed also at the surface of unevolved stars. Observing that the ejecta which are CNO processed must also be helium enriched, we have modelled stellar evolution of globular ...

The Mildly Metal-poor Globular Cluster M4: Star-to-star Abundance Variations in 20 Giants

Many low-metallicity globular clusters exhibit large star-to-star variations of C, N, O, Na, Mg, & Al abundances. In higher-metallicity clusters, the abundance swings are muted. Evidence of anticorrelations of O versus Na and Mg versus Al exists in classical northern-hemisphere clusters spanning a range of metallicities, –0.8 ≤ [Fe/H] ≤ –2.2. These and other anticorrelations, observed to be a f...

All quiet in the outer halo : chemical abundances in the globular cluster Pal 3 ⋆

Context. Globular clusters (GCs) in the outer halo are important probes of the composition and origin of the Galactic stellar halo. Aims. We derive chemical element abundance ratios in red giants belonging to the remote (R ∼90 kpc) GC Pal 3 and compare our measurements to those for red giant stars in both inner and outer halo GCs. Methods. From high-resolution spectroscopy of four red giants, o...

The Bizarre Chemical Inventory of Ngc 2419, an Extreme Outer Halo Globular Cluster

We present new Keck/HIRES observations of six red giants in the globular cluster NGC 2419. Although the cluster is among the most distant and most luminous in the Milky Way, it was considered chemically ordinary until very recently. Our previous work showed that the near-infrared Ca II triplet line strength varied more than expected for a chemically homogeneous cluster, and that at least one st...
